Best of the Dunesteef (Re: SF Signal)

It was recently brought to my attention that SF Signal (which gives news and reviews of Science Fiction films, books, television, and apparently, podcasts) did an overview of our show, and presented the ten best Dunesteef episodes ever (or yet, if you're an optimist).

Here's the link: http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/2014/12/podcast-spotlight-dunesteef/
It's pretty awesome that we were featured on any blog or website, especially one that's not hate-motivated.  But these guys have won two Hugo Awards, one for Best Fanzine, and one for Best Fancast, and I think, legally, you cannot shake a stick at that.

According to David Steffen, the best shows were, as follows:
  1. “This Must be the Place” by Elliott Bangs
  2. “Hang Up and Try Again” by Derek L. Palmer
  3. “The Day Hypnotism Died” by Kevin David Anderson
  4. “The Short Life and Slow Death of Timmy Van Lowe” by Bryan Lincoln
  5. “Peacemaker, Peacemaker, Little Bo Peep” by Jason Sanford
  6. “Anakoinosis” by Tobias S. Buckell
  7. “Überman” by John Medaille
  8. “Plague Birds” by Jason Sanford
  9. “Saying Goodbye” by Christopher Munroe
  10. “The Dead of Tetra Manna” by Mark L.S. Stone
  11. “Whelp” by Damon Shaw
  12. “Tattletale” by Christopher Fisher
  13. “Tupac Shakur and the End of the World” by Sandra McDonald
  14. “Good Day” by Saul Lemerond
  15. “Open Twenty-Four Hours” by Edward McKeown
As cool as it all is, I think it's a crime that certain shows were omitted from the list.  Episodes like "The Wang Swung Slowly Like Mobiles Above the Crib of a Deformed Child" by Algar Van Cluth,
"From the Bowels It Came" by B.D. Anklevich, "Journey Into . . . Uranus" by Marshal Latham, and
"Cat Lovers Burn Hardest (In Hell)" by Rish Outfield.

But hey, that's just me.

Rish's story "Sleeptalkin' Gal" available on Amazon and Audible

A certain podcasting partner of mine has a wife who talks in her sleep (or she wakes and chats, but not enough to actually remember the conversations).  After hearing about this, the story "Sleeptalkin' Gal" was born.

If you'd like to check it out, it's available to read and to listen to.*  Feel free to pick up a copy over at Amazon (here), or the audio version through Audible (here).

Happy Thanksgiving

This is a busy time for me and Big in our respective jobs, and since Big has a herd of kids, the holiday season is probably a nightmare of Elm Street proportions.  But I thought I'd take two minutes (maybe longer, since my internet just went out . . . as it does a couple of times every single day) to say thanks, on behalf of my friend, for the good, good people who have supported us and our endeavors over the years, and in 2014 particularly.

Last year, the Dunesteef slowed greatly, and floundered a bit on the beach of podcasting.  This year, it came back in a big way, though never quite reaching the productivity it did when we began.  Big and I have lots of other obligations and creative outlets in our lives now, and our own writing "careers" is a significant one.  I put careers in quotes because, well . . .

We each have our own podcasts separate from one another, I've been trying--sometimes even successfully--to make money doing audiobooks, we have jobs, and families, and drudgery, and reading, and television, and that thing in the shed in the middle of the woods that we seldom talk about.

But it's nice to have the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine and That Gets My Goat.  It's nice to know there are people who anticipate each new episode, and the occasional listener who comments or posts in the forums or emails us is, well, it's very nice.  I'm thankful for that, thankful for the good people who have donated their voices, their music, their art, and their producing skills so we can present new stories to our small, but high-quality fanbase.  I'm thankful for the people who have supported us financially, enabling Big and me to get together every other week or so and eat and record without robbing his new son's community college education fund.

So, thank you.  And thank you to other podcasters who invite us to work on their shows, because that's not just an honor . . . it's fun.  And thank you, of course, to Announcer Man and Sir Fake Sean Connery; we'll miss you when you're gone.

But enough about that.  Go hang out with people who are important to you.  Feed your face.  Be thankful.  And if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, well, have a good week anyway.

Rish performs "Hunters Unlucky" by Abigail Hilton on Audible

Rish here.  How I spent my summer vacation:  I narrated an epic novel for Abbie Hilton called "Hunters Unlucky."  It is a massive adventure story about a faraway land with sentient animals, all battling for control and territories with the other species living there.  We meet Storm, a runt ferryshaft (a horse-like race that has been conquered by the creasia, great big deadly cats), and his struggles to survive in a world where the weak and small are often the first to die.  He develops speed and cunning and manages to increase the chances of himself and those around him.

Hilton has created an extraordinary world with history, personalities, grudges, fear, wonder, prejudices, and regrets that she describes as a teen book in the tradition of "Watership Down" and "The Jungle Book."  Basically kids, it's like "Game of Thrones" with talking animals.

This was, hands down, the most difficult production I've undertaken, with real depth and a large page count, dozens of developed characters, with different voices and accents, and enough twists and turns to fill a boxed set of a J.J. Abrams show.  I'm not one to toot my own horn, but . . . toot.

Check it out at this link: http://www.audible.com/pd/Teens/Hunters-Unlucky-Audiobook/B00PMEU8PG/ or join Abbie as she presents the novel in podcast form over the next several months.  That can be found over at: http://www.abigailhilton.com/the-worlds-of-abigail-hilton-p/

13 Nights of Halloween 12: "From Another World" by Rish Outfield

Rish took it upon himself to write an audio drama for the final nights of this marathon. Is it inspiration...or madness?

Special thanks to Bryan Lincoln and Renee Chambliss for lending their voices to today's episode. Music was Echoes of Time by Kevin MacLeod at Incompetech.com. Some sound effects were provided by the Freesound Project.

Rish appears on "Campfire Radio Theater"

Rish here.  Over the last month or so, I've been trying to write an audio drama, ostensibly for our Halloween show.  It's a weird subgenre of screenwriting, and it's been a challenge trying to describe action without any narration.  Who knows if I'll actually succeed in my attempt?  Only Bryan Lincoln knows.

Anyway, if you want to hear how effective audio drama can be, head over to the "Campfire Radio Theater" podcast, and hear "Rip," the production Wilson Fowlie and J. Scott Ballentine pulled off.  It manages to be both extremely funny and not just a little scary, and I got to voice a major character in Old Jim, the teller of the tale of the most famous murderer in history.*

The production is kind of amazing, and parts are very disturbing (there are some sound effects that may have been a delight to create, but are revolting to listen to).

In listening to it, I got nervous, hearing all the genuine, lovely English accents, knowing that my own was coming up.  Whether I botched it or not I really can't say.  Again, maybe Bryan Lincoln does.

It airs in two parts, the second of which just dropped, and can be found at these links:

Rish's voice on Drabblecast

Apparently, on a clear day, you can see all the way to conspiracy. At least, that's what Desmond Warzel would have you believe.

Years ago, I heard this story on Escapepod, and this week, it's appearing in full-cast form on the Drabblecast. It's done as a radio show, using fans' call-ins as almost all of the parts.  Thanks to (the great) Norm Sherman, I am one of the callers.

It's been a little while since I got to be on the Drabblecast, and though I've given up my dream of ever having one of my stories run there, it's very cool to be back, even in a very small part.  I need to stop producing my own show, and start listening to Drabblecast again.

Seriously, kids.  This production (and the story itself) is AWESOME.  I make you this personal guarantee: you will be thoroughly entertained, or I will personally refund your purchase price.  Put that in your iPod

Big n Rish on the "Journey Into..." podcast and a Kickstarter to Boot

Many, many moons ago, Marshal Latham got us to record our voices for a forthcoming "Journey Into..." episode. It was for a Ken Scholes story with the terse title "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Threads and Dancing with the Sunrise."

Now, it's finally available, and looking over the cast list, which includes Josh Roseman, Julie Hoverson, Johnny Feisty*, Bryan Lincoln, Nathaniel Lee, Marshal Dillon Latham, and Wilson Fowlie.

The story tells of the great city of Windwir, which has been destroyed, and the Androfrancine order wiped out. The only survivor seems to be a lone mechanical man.  Big voices a villain and Rish voices one of the title characters.

Here be the link to listen to the story.

Marshal has even published the outtakes from the story already too. He puts all his outtakes on a separate podcast he calls "Strew Along the Path". I suppose that means these are the things that got lost along the way on the "Journey Into..." or something. Anyway, check the outtakes out HERE.

Marshal has been very passionate about the work of Ken Scholes, and has just started a Kickstarter project to get Ken to write a story for the Edgar Allan Poe month. His goal is very reachable, and it amused me to read the incentives one could get by supporting the fundraiser (though I don't know that his vow to "bathe your bare, hairy feet in my tears" was the wisest pledge).

Check out the kickstarter here, and donate to the effort.

Rish's story "Birth of a Sidekick" available on Amazon and Audible

Buy it!!

A few years ago, I started reading books in the Western genre, and I thought it would be fun to create a cowboy hero who would go from town to town to right wrongs, bed bad guys, and shoot maidens fair.  I came up with the barest idea for the character, and suddenly thought, "What if he had a kid sidekick, like Batman, Captain America, Green Arrow, Aquaman, the Human Torch, and (once) Indiana Jones?  They could have a series of adventures together, wherein the little boy becomes a man!"  I absolutely LOVE the idea of the child sidekick, and will make no apologies for it.

The story I wrote, "Birth of a Sidekick," was the result.  It's not really the first story in a series (though Big suggested I could write more), and it's not a true Western.  But it's something I wrote that was a bit different from everything else I had written, and I decided to put it out in both text version and audio.

I sat down and recorded the whole thing . . . and then left it there.  It sat for months, gathering virtual dust, and went nowhere, just like everything else I create.

But no, I mustn't think like that.  I must put out my stuff, give people at least the CHANCE to read it (or listen to it, if they prefer).  And so, here it is.

I was lucky enough to get some pretty impressive cover art by David Krummenacher (above), and if I could somehow employ him to do art for every one of my stories, I'd put out . . . well, probably one or two.

Link is here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MQMX05C at Amazon and http://www.smashwords.com/upload/details/468527 at Smashwords.

And here's the link to the audio version on Audible: http://www.audible.com/pd/Teens/Birth-of-a-Sidekick-Audiobook/B00NAC94MU/ref=a_search_c4_1_13_srTtl?qid=1410209624&sr=1-13  I performed it myself, and I'd appreciate it if somebody out there buys it.

Rish's voice on Pseudopod

I noticed today that the next Netflix disc coming to me is Showtime's 2007 adaptation of James Triptree Junior's "The Screwfly Solution." It occurred to me that Pseudopod was going to present that as an episode (and that I had a small part in it) sometime. I went over there, and discovered it's already available.

Presented as their 400th episode, "Screwfly" is a timelessly disturbing story about a plague that spreads across the world, causing men to despise females of the species . . . and murder them. As you can guess, it's not a tale for the Hallmark Channel crowd.

They chose to do it in fullcast (for some reason), and I have a very minor role in the thing, but sometimes, that's good enough.

Check it out at: http://pseudopod.org/2014/08/22/pseudopod-400-the-screwfly-solution/  If you dare.

Rish's story "Lighthouse View" on Horror Addicts podcast

This is the fourth year in a row I've entered the Masters of the Macabre contest, a short story challenge over at Horror Addicts dot net.  They provide an overall theme for the contest, and those participating are given three variables that have to be in the story.   This year, the theme was Creature Feature*, monster stories, and my three variables were: (Story) Location: Lighthouse, Item: Camera, and Creature Origin: Volcano.
My tale tells of a young woman who comes to a lighthouse to interview the old man who lives there, but also hoping to get footage of the monster that supposedly emerged from an underwater volcanic eruption somewhere off the coast.  She starts the interview, and then hears a noise from outside the lighthouse . . .

It is called "Lighthouse View," and is a considerably stripped-down version of my first draft.  I'm not sure how good it is, but it was fun to write, and is yet another tale I'd never have come up with had the contest not suggested it.
There are five participants in the contest this year, but feel free to go over and listen to (or read) all five stories, and vote for your favorite.  Here be the link: http://horroraddicts.wordpress.com/2014/08/12/master-of-macabre-3-rish-outfield/

Rish Performs "Of Men & Wolves" on Far-Fetched Fables

Although I try to accept every invitation that comes my way, I thought Gary Dowell (editor of the then-forthcoming Far Fetched Fables), was crazy to have sent me "Of Men and Wolves" to narrate.  On first glance, it was a tale told in the first-person of the struggles of the newly-widowed wife of a barbarian.   As I read the tale by An Owomoyela, and I discovered that the main character wasn't exactly a woman (or exactly a man either), I wondered how I would pull it off (not to mention pronouncing the name of the author).

But I recorded it, doing my best to deliver an androgynous, accented performance, but also to bring some emotion to the table, and I'll admit that there were a couple parts I thought were pretty okay. After that, I had to edit the recording, and it was then that I picked up on some nuances and language craft that I hadn't appreciated before. By the time it was done, I thought "Of Men and Wolves" was a pretty high quality tale.

You can check it out over at www.farfetchedfables.com/far-fetched-fables-no-16/ and judge for yourself.

The Journals of Jacob and Hyde

Longtime friend-of-the-show Tobias Queen has just released his first audiobook by way of ACX onto Audible.  It's called The Journals of Jacob and Hyde: Jehovah and Hades, Book 1 by Randall J. Morris.  Rish and Big both played a small part in his production, so we thought we'd mention it here for you in case you are interested in checking it out. Tobias Queen is the golden voiced narrator that has appeared in many of our productions over on the podcast, most notably The Troop by Tobias Harris, an all-Tobias affair which he performed entirely by himself, a first on our show if I remember right.  So, you can be sure that your ears will enjoy the velvety smoothness of his voice no matter what the story is like.

Oh, what is the story like?  Well, according to the Amazon page, it's something like this:

Jake was just a normal kid who enjoyed hearing his mother's bedtime stories. The stories became shockingly real when he discovered that he was a descendant of Dr. Jekyll, and that he had his own Mr. Hyde living inside him. Driven by a desire to do good, he attempts to hunt down and kill the remaining Hyde monsters.

Can he finish off the onslaught of Hyde monsters and keep the girl he loves safe from their retaliation?

Check it out if you're interested, Tobias will surely thank you for it...oh, and Randall J. Morris probably will too.

Big 'n Rish Perform Characters on Tim Pratt's "The Nex" on Audible

My buddy Marshal Latham (wherever I go, he goes) recently spent months putting together a full-cast audio production of "The Nex" by Tim Pratt.  It's a six hour production about a teenage girl who travels to a parallel world (actually the center of all parallel universes) where she makes a couple of unique friends, and encounters some nasty and/or powerful enemies.

Marshal demonstrated his madness in casting several of his friends and fellow podcasters in the production, including Renee Chambliss, Abbie Hilton, Dave Robison, Bryan Lincoln, Scribe Harris, Julie Hoverson, Dave Thompson, Veronica Giguere, Johnny Feisty, and Lauren Nicholson.  Big and
I got to voice Templeton and the evil Regent, respectively.

The audiobook is available for sale on Audible at this link and is already up on iTunes.

Rish 'n Big Perform "Stranger Vs. Malignant Malevolency" on Podcastle

"Last Contact" by Rish n Big available on Amazon.com

In 2012, I called Big up to tell him about the struggles I was having coming up with an idea for a short story contest I was entering.  We ended up talking about it the whole drive home, and by then, we had somehow decided to write the story together.  Unlike every other collaboration I can think of (writing-wise, at least), we actually managed to work this one through to the end.

"Last Contact" is a fairly long story about Hughes, a high school boy, who has an alien in his class.  These aliens are refugees that have landed on Earth and are liked by pretty much no one, Hughes included.  When he gets stuck having the alien girl as his Biology partner, though, he gets to know her, and it is increasingly difficult to hate someone once you get to know them.

At least in this story it is, I dunno.

This story was written together, which made it come out differently than it would have had I/he written it alone.  I still don't know how true collaborations can work, but if you'd like to check out the story, it can be found and purchased at this link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KI2H4MW

I did a sketch that was originally going to be the cover art (see below), then tasked Gino Moretto to do something with it.  It's got an unusual cardboardy feel to it I'm not sure how he created, but that feels like a sort of collaboration too.

"Last Contact" also includes an Authors' Note that Big and I wrote together.  I hope that people buy the story.  I hope that people like the story.  When we run it on the Dunesteef, I hope it's somebody's favorite episode.  But more than that, I hope we do more collaborations together in the years we have left.  Time will tell.

TGMG 135: Captain America 2: Fifty Shades of Grey 2

So, having been kicked out of the library, then forced out of the park, Big and Rish take refuge in Big's car to finish talking about CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Find out what their favorite parts were.  Find out what Big wanted to see at the end.  Find out what insignificant detail "ruined" the movie for Rish!

*Note: since this recording, Fox has announced British actor Toby Kebbell (born 1982) will be playing Doctor Doom in their FF reboot.  Could've been worse.

TGMG 134: Captain America: Fifty Shades of Grey

So, Big and Rish very nearly didn't get to see CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER a few days ago.  But they tried just as hard to do a podcast about it.

Warning: Movie spoilers up the vibranium shield.

That Gets My Goat 133: Caricature Flaws

In January, Rish and Big got their caricatures drawn by a real artist (you could tell by the beret). Now come the complaints.

Rish 'n Big Take Over The "Journey Into..." Podcast (Part Deux)

Recently, Marshal Latham over at the "Journey Into..." podcast edited and ran "The Gold Bug" by Edgar Allan Poe, and promptly had a nervous breakdown.  Anybody would.

So, he asked others if they would produce an episode of his show, sort of guest-hosting like Joan Rivers, Dave Letterman, and Jay Leno used to do for Johnny Carson.  Dave Thompson, Podcastle Enforcer did a show, and Marshal asked us to do one too, centered around "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.

1948's short story is one of the classics of the 20th Century, and while I don't think the NBC 1951 version we "presented" on the show does it justice, it was still fun to talk about it.

I thought it would be amusing to tie Marshal up and stick him in the basement, and maybe it's only amusing to me, but we're over there, making his controlled, reverent show quite the opposite. Check it out, if you wanna, at this link: http://www.journeyintopodcast.blogspot.com/2014/03/journey-91-lottery-by-shirley-jackson.html

Also, back in January, we took part in a group poetry reading session scripted by Señor Latham, that should be enjoyable.  It's at this link: http://strewnalongthepath.blogspot.com/2014/03/9-strewn-along-path-impromptu-poe-etry.html

TGMG 132: Where Is Thy Sting?

Big and Rish had a favorite musician in common in the form of Sting.  In this episode, they talk about their memories of (and frustrations with) this particular Rock & Roll star/Jazz musican/Country artist/Classical crooner/Lute player.

NOTE: This was recorded last year (in Big's old house even) as what we have come to refer to as Evergreen Episodes, which are conversations we record that can be edited and aired regardless of when we get around to releasing them.  Unfortunately, since that time, Sting has put out a new album, "The Last Ship," filled with songs written for a forthcoming musical play about the shipyards of Newcastle, where he grew up.  If and when Big and Rish ever see this play, be assured, we'll do an episode about it.

Rish Performs "The Jester At Scar" by E.C. Tubb at Audible.com

"The Jester at Scar" is the latest E.C. Tubb book about Earl Dumarest to become available to purchase.  This was the last of my five-book contract with Wildside Press.

In this one, Dumarest ends up on a planet called Scar, where the seasons are short, and the winters so deadly, the world basically shuts down.  During the spring and summer, though, the planet comes to life, because there are tons of fungi growing out there, and some are incredibly valuable.  Earl and his friend go out looking for The Golden Spore, which is so rare it makes anyone who finds it instantly rich.  He, of course, makes a ton of enemies along the way.

As I've mentioned before, this is simply the fifth book in a thirty-three book series (which I believe might have kept going if not for the death of the author*), but I was doing it at the end of last year, when I was busy, tired, and pretty darn sick of audiobooks.

Now that it's come out, though, and I've taken a bit of vacation from them (although I had to cut my holiday short to fix several errors in the edited recordings), maybe it's time to follow Earl around on another of his adventures.
