I was also raised in northern CA and have similar feelings about LA. Have you ever noticed that in southern CA when referring to freeways they put a "the" in front of the freeway number? So it's "the 405" and "the 101" and "the 5": up here we don't. It's freeway numbers without articles! I take 80 to 880 when I'm going to visit my dad, for example. That's probably the most prominent dialect difference between the two halves of CA. I noticed it when I went to college down in San Diego.
Did you guys know World Con is in Reno this summer? I might go. It'll be my first Con. I doubt I'll ever make it to DragonCon or BaltiCon, but World Con is so close and the timing is good. http://www.renovationsf.org/
