Rish here. I was pleased to get an email today from Cast of Wonders, the YA Fantasy podcast. Apparently, they've chosen one of my readings for an "Encore" performance, this week's episode.
So, I produced a reading of "Cosmetic Procedures" by Desmond Warzel years ago (2013). It's a story of a private investigator hired to check out a man's wife who, after becoming involved with a makeup company, has been acting strangely.
Fun stuff. Desmond's a fine writer, as I aspire to be. Desmond's a fine writer, as I aspire to be.
Anyway, if you don't remember the story all that well, check it out HERE. Heck, even if you remember it well, feel free to give it another listen.*

Christmas Broken Mirror Story prompt
Hey, kids, don't forget our 2020 Christmas Broken Mirror Story Contest. The prompt ended up being:
"You're invited to your girlfriend's/boyfriend's family Christmas dinner for the first time, but the meal isn't what you were expecting."
Big and I have already written our stories* but you have until the end of January to get us yours.
Just email them to us at the address editor(at)dunesteef(dot)com, and get in on the fun! Try not to make them too long (like ours), and let us know if you have questions.**
Rish "Angles In The" Outfield
*Spoiler alert, they're both too long.
**Or, if you'd like to be an Oompa Loompa and critique them.

Rish Narrates "Deep Water" On StarShipSofa
Rish here.
Know that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an age when Big Anklevich and I were young, wide-eyed podcasters, and we did a few readings for StarShipSofa, the Audio Science Fiction Magazine. This was one of the big boys, producing works from top-notch writers, and winning a Hugo Award as Best Fanzine.
They went on to many great things, but their greatest impact on me was introducing us to Jason Sanford, who enjoyed our reading of "When Thorns Are The Tips Of Trees" enough to let us start doing his stories on the Dunesteef.*
But many years have passed since we worked with StarShipSofa, and those days, like being a regular podcast, are long behind us. Except for a month ago, when new editor (and holder of the answer to the Riddle of Steel) Gary Dowell sent me an email and asked if I'd like to do a story for them. Of course I said yes . . . and now you can hear me perform "Deep Water" by Steven Fischer.
It's a short piece, about a man attempting a rescue mission in a spacecraft damaged by an asteroid collision. Check it out at THIS LINK.
We shall see if more stories come my way. If so, then let me tell you of the days of high adventure!
*There's still one more Sanford story out there that I think about from time to time, and in a moment of ambition, I will produce it for the show.

TGMG 231: The (Other) Top American Books - Lost Episode
"On the go!" - Big Anklevich
"This is the worst episode we've ever done." - Rish Outfield
In March of 2017, Big and I recorded this episode during a road trip, and I thought it turned out so poorly that I never released it.* But at the same time, I never deleted the file.
Well, I decided to listen to it the last time I went camping, and after the first ten minutes or so, I decided it might be entertaining, at least to me and Big. So, here is Big and me discussing the books that shaped America. At least, the books after the most important ones.
Whether you agree with the list, and our thoughts about the books on it, I'm sure we can all agree . . . that the sound DEFINITELY makes the episode unlistenable.

*Also, the audio quality is slightly worse than terrible.

Christmas Story Prompt
Hey, folks, Rish and I have a request for you. Each year, the two of us have been trying to write Christmas related stories during the month of December. Our stories that we wrote last year will be appearing this December as our holiday episodes of the show.
December is fast approaching, and we thought it would be fun to ask our listeners for a writing prompt for our stories this year. So, if you're interested, toss us an idea, and we'll look at them all and pick one to base our stories on. Make it simple and open-ended, something that could be taken anywhere. Like our prompts from our old Broken Mirror Story Evens.
We'd really love to see what you've got!

Rish and Marshal Latham talk about "Kin"
Hey, remember the movie review show that Rish used to do with Marshal Latham?
No? It was called "Outfield Excursions."
Still no?
Well, it exists, and in this episode, they discus a little film you may not have heard about called KIN.
Here be the link.

That Gets My Goat 230: Lost & Frowned
When Rish went into a bookstore and saw Orson Scott Card's new book "Lost and Found" on the shelf, he thought, "Hey, I wrote a story called that once." But when he read the description of the book, he thought, "Hey, I wrote a story with that plot once."
Just that week, he had started work on a sequel, but now he wondered what the point was. What does Big say? What do you say? What might Orson Scott Card say?

Rish Narrates "The Forsakened" On Audible
Just when Rish thought he was out . . . he's done another audiobook over on Audible.
This one is a Horror novel by Angela Townsend entitled "The Forsakened," a sequel to her book "The Forlorned." It's about a man who has somehow angered a particularly vengeful spirit, and must figure out what she wants . . . before he becomes a ghost himself.
Feel free to check out the book AT THIS LINK, especially if you want to see if Rish's Irish accent has gotten any better.
(good luck with that, by the way)

Yeah, it happened. Rish broke down and saw a Bayverse Transformers movie.

TGMG 228: Spider-Man MCU No More
Uh oh, Mommy and Daddy are fighting again. What will poor Peter Parker do? Sony and Disney have failed to come to an agreement on Spider-man, and now Sony says it's going to walk away, take their ball and go home, and Spider-man will no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What does that mean? Can things possibly still work out? And if they don't, is there any hope for Spider-man? We talk about those questions and more on Today's That Gets My Goat.

TGMG 227: Spider-man: Far From Done Talking
This may be our longest--and latest?--episode yet, wherein we discuss SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, its spoilers, and its implications.
It should have been done long ago (and perhaps split into multiple shows), but Rish wasn't able to get to it until now. We assure you he'll be much quicker in getting you their review of the recent LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, starring Lon Chaney and Marceline Day.

Rish Narrates "Soul Cleaver Clarence" on Cast of Wonders
Rish here. Some time ago, Katherine Inskip over at Cast of Wonders (The YA Fantasy Podcast) contacted me about doing another story for them. Apparently, author Matthew Jarvis had tasked me* with narrating his tale, "Soul Cleaver Clarence."
It is about a young dragon unhappy with the role in life he's been cast in, who meets a young human woman who's unhappy with the role she's been given. A full-cast production, the voice talents of Alexis Goble, M.K. Hobson, Jen R. Albert, and Cheyenne Wright round out (i.e. save) my narration. I know a little something about putting together full-cast productions, so the episode must be pretty special to go to all that extra trouble.
You can check it out AT THIS LINK.

TGMG 226: Killjoy Story
Big and Rish get together in the flesh(!) to talk about TOY STORY 4.
Which one didn't want to go see it? Which one hates the Disney live-action remakes more? Which one actually liked one of them? Which one can do a Keanu Reeves impression? Which one brings up STAR WARS first? Which one actually likes sequels? Which one can remember the name of the next Pixar film? Which one is sick of the MCU's box office record-breaking? Which one is upset by the LITTLE MERMAID remake's casting? And which one was made terribly sad by the ending of TOY STORY 4?

TGMG 225: Pops Go The World
In a throwback episode to when these shows were used to complain, Rish bends Big's ear about Pop Vinyls (or Funko Pops). Does Rish compare Pop collectors to Star Wars collectors? Does Big own any Pop Vinyls? Does Rish?
If so, does that make him a hypocrite? You be the judge.

Rish & Marshal Talk About DRACULA UNTOLD
Rish here. Once upon a time, Marshal Latham and I had a movie podcast called "Outfield Excursions," wherein we talked about a movie he picked one show, and a movie I picked the next. At least that's how it works in theory.
Well, I sort of forced the guy to sit down and watch DRACULA UNTOLD because I had gotten it from the library and enjoying the way it began, I paused the movie and called Marshal up to tell him about it. If you want to hear our discussion about the movie, and whether I regret that phone call, you can check it out RIGHT HERE at the Journey Into... website.

Rish Performs "Whatever Comes After Calcutta" On Pseudopod
Rish here. It's been a long time (. . . gettin' from there to here), but I was recently asked to do another story for Pseudopod, the Horror podcast. I may bellyache about the editing, but I really enjoy narrating and voice acting, and the Escape Artists shows are a much higher-profile gig than any of my own podcasts.
This week's story is "Whatever Comes After Calcutta" by David Eric Nelson. It's about a lawyer who goes home and finds his wife in bed with another man, gets shot, goes after the couple, and stumbles upon what looks like a public lynching in a small Ohio town.* The townsfolk seem to have found themselves a witch.
The story is really dark, but there's something so delightfully absurd about it that I'd have probably pestered Big about running it on our own podcast if it had come our way. It's considerably longer than the stories I usually do for Pseudopod. Heck, it'd be long even for the Dunesteef.
But it's available now, over at THIS LINK, and if you like my work, it's what they call in show circles as a tour de force of Rish Benjamin Outfield's storytellin' abilities. If you don't like my part-and-parcel way of narrating, though, I warn you . . . get out! Get out now! The 'casts are coming from inside the house!
Rish B. Outfield
*Although, I looked it up, and Calcutta, Ohio is four times bigger than the town I grew up in, so it's all relative.

Big 'n Rish's Voices on "Journey Into IFC"
Hey there, kids. The "Journey Into..." podcast is back this week, with a story by R.C. Anderson, called "Journey Into IFC." Rish and Big both voice characters, one is a world-weary overworked employee, the other a nerdy skinny version of George Lucas.
There aren't so many shows around like this anymore, where you can hear both of us, so check it out AT THIS LINK!

That Gets My Goat 221: The Bigg Apple
Big's vagabond shoes are longing to stray, so he regales Rish (and you) with details of his recent trip to New York City. He checks out the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Ellis Island, the Flatiron Building, the Place Where They Keep The CHUDs, the subway (oops already said that), the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial, and Broadway (twice!).

*No, Big doesn't spell his name with an extra g, as I'm well aware. But thanks for reminding me.

Was it Crap(tain)? Or was it Marvel(ous)? Okay, that wasn't great. But you try naming these things, week after week. See what it does to you.

That Gets My Goat 216: Spider-verse, Same As The First
Rish Outfield, world's biggest Spider-man fan (or maybe it's world's biggest Bossk fan, maybe you should just ignore that statement), and Big Anklevich, world's biggest waist, got together (virtually) to talk about the new Spider-man animated feature film called SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. Did they like the film? Did they like the animation style? Did Big Anklevich continually use annoying phrases like, "second verse, same as the first," over and over again? Find out by...you know, listening to the show.
